Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

When you live in a free country you can, for the most part, do as you please in life with your free time. But with freedom comes responsibility. How you live your life determines how successful you will be in life. Just because you can say and do things, doesn’t mean you should. Here are some lessons I learned from my five-year study about wealthy, successful people:

  • You can watch T.V. or spend time on Facebook but you should be reading a book for self-improvement.
  • You can eat what you please but you should eat in moderation.
  • You can sit on a couch but you should be exercising.
  • You can go to a bar after work but you should be using your time to pursue a dream, purpose or goal.
  • You can procrastinate on a task but you should be accomplishing that task.
  • You can gossip but you should avoid gossiping.
  • You can smoke cigarettes but you should stop smoking.
  • You can listen to the radio or music during your commute but you should be listening to audiobooks.
  • You can drink in excess but you should drink in moderation.
  • You can party but you should be doing your homework.
  • You can lose your temper but you should control your temper.
  • You can blame others for your circumstances but you should be taking responsibility for your circumstances.
  • You can leave work early but you should stay late to get work done.
  • You can lease an expensive car but you should buy an inexpensive car.
  • You can buy your lunch but you should bring lunch in from home.
  • You can charge something on a credit card you can’t afford but you should forego that purchase.
  • You can ignore your family but you should spend more time with your family.
  • You can stay home but you should go to that wake.
  • You can ignore your friends but you should be calling them to say hello.
  • You can buy or rent a home you can’t afford but you should live within your means.
  • You can spend your money but you should put it in a savings account.
  • You can opt-out of your company retirement plan but you should contribute 10% of your income to it.
  • You can file your tax returns late but you should file them on time.
  • You can set aside your industry periodicals but you should read them.
  • You can wake up at 7 am but you should wake up at 5 am and start writing that book.
  • You can say what’s on your mind but you should not let every thought come out of your mouth.
  • You can choose to waste your time unproductively but you should spend your time productively.
