Your Why is Your Compass

tip-o-the-morning

My research is clear. Your habits determine your standard of living for you and your family.

Your habits are the reason you live in a mansion by the ocean or a slum in the ghetto.

Your habits are the reason your children go to expensive private schools or are relegated to a public education.

Your habits are the reason you rise to success, while others wallow in poverty or the middle-class.

But how is it that some individuals forge success habits and others do not?

The answer is your WHY.

Those who have a WHY cultivate certain, specific habits that are necessary in order for them to pursue their WHY.

In most cases your WHY is a dream you are pursuing.

Your WHY is your compass.

It steers you in the right direction and provides you with everything you will need in order to realize your WHY:

  • It directs the action you must take in order to succeed.
  • It directs the habits you must forge to help you achieve your goals.
  • It directs the relationships you must grow in order to open the right doors.
  • It directs the books you must read in order to acquire the knowledge you will need to become an expert in your field.
  • It directs the skills you must acquire in order to set you apart from the herd.
  • It directs what you do with your 24 hours.
  • It gives you the motivation you need.
  • It gives you the optimism that every successful person possesses.
  • It gives you the persistence to overcome all obstacles placed in your way.
  • It gives you the correct intuition in making the right decisions.
  • It gives you the incredible work ethic that is required in order to succeed.

Your WHY opens up a Pandora’s box of success traits you never imagined you had.

Find your WHY and life will give you everything you need and want.

Levels of Confidence

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

You cannot think your way to confidence. Confidence is something that must be earned.  You build that confidence one level at a time.

There are there levels that will help you build confidence:

LEVEL #1 – Expert Knowledge

Having specialized knowledge in a particular field or niche is the first level.

LEVEL #2 – Expert Knowledge and Advanced Skills

Having both Expert Knowledge and Advanced Skills in a particular field or niche takes you to the next level, elevating your confidence even higher.

LEVEL #3 – Expert Knowledge, Advanced Skills and Achieving Success

The highest level of confidence is attained when you have mastered all three levels: Expert Knowledge, Advanced Skills and Achieving Success. This makes you a bone fide expert in your field or niche.

Rich Habits Poor Habit Episode 45 | Will Your Child be Rich or Poor? 15 Poverty Habits Parents Teach Their Children

When Tom Corley  travels the country speaking to high school and college students about exactly what they need to do to become financially successful in life he always begins his presentation by asking three questions… lose saving

“How many want to be financially successful in life?”

“How many think they will be financially successful in life?”

Almost every time I ask the first two questions every hand rises in the air.

Then he asks the magic third question:

“How many have taken a course in school on how to be financially successful in life?”

Not one hand rises in the air, ever.

Clearly every student wants to be successful and thinks they will be successful but none have been taught by their parents or their school system how to be financially successful in life.

Not only are there no courses on basic financial success principles but there are no structured courses teaching basic financial literacy.

We are raising our children to be financially illiterate and to fail in life.

Is it any wonder that most Americans live paycheck to paycheck? kids money learn teach coin child lesson school piggy bank mum mother parent

That most Americans accumulate more debt than assets?

That many Americans lose their homes when they lose their job?

Is it any wonder that most Americans cannot afford college for their children and that student loan debt is now the largest type of consumer debt?

What’s worse is what our children are being taught by their parents, the school system, politicians and the national media.

They are teaching our children that the wealthy are corrupt, greedy, have too much wealth and that this wealth needs to be redistributed.

What kind of a message do you think that sends to America’s future generation?

It is teaching them that seeking financial success is a bad and evil thing.

Here are some statistics from his five-year study on the daily habits that separate the wealthy from the poor?

  1. 72% of the wealthy know their credit score vs. 5% of the poor.
    ad_rhph
  2. 6% of the wealthy play the lottery vs. 77% of the poor.
  3. 80% of the wealthy are focused on at least one goal vs. 12% of the poor.
  4. 62% of the wealthy floss their teeth every day vs. 16% of the poor.
  5. 21% of the wealthy are overweight by 30 pounds or more vs. 66% of the poor.
  6. 63% of the wealthy spend less than 1 hour per day on recreational Internet use. 74% of the poor spend more than an hour a day in the Internet.
  7. 83% of the wealthy attend back to school night for their kids vs. 13% of the poor.
  8. 29% of the wealthy had one or more children who made the honor roll vs. 4% of the poor.
  9. 63% of wealthy listen to audio books during their commute vs. 5% of the poor.
  10. 67% of the wealthy watch less than 1 hour of TV per day vs 23% of the poor.
  11. 9% of the wealthy watch reality TV shows vs. 78% of the poor.
  12. 73% of the wealthy were taught the 80/20 rule vs. 5% of the poor (live off 80% save 20%).
  13. 79% of the wealthy network 5 hours or more per month vs. 16% of the poor.
  14. 8% of the wealthy believe wealth comes from random good luck vs. 79% of the poor.
  15. 79% of the wealthy believe they are responsible for their financial circumstances. 82% of the poor believe they are victims and not responsible for their poverty.

The fact is the poor are poor because they have too many Poverty Habits and too few Rich Habits.

The best parents teach their children good habits that lead to success and the worst parents teach their kids bad habits that lead to poverty.

We don’t have a wealth gap in this country we have a parent gap.

We don’t have income inequality, we have parent inequality.

Parents and our schools need to work together to instill good daily success habits.

They need to be teaching children specific Rich Habits that lead to success.

Here are some examples:

  • Limit TV, social media, video games and cell phone use to no more than one hour a day.
  • Require that children read one non-fiction book a week and write a one page summary of what they learned for their parents to review. children-403582_1280
  • Require children to aerobically exercise 20 – 30 minutes a day.
  • Limit junk food to no more than 300 calories a day.
  • Teach children to dream and to pursue their dreams. Have them write a script of their ideal, future life.
  • Require that children set monthly, annual and long-term goals.
  • Require working age children to work or volunteer at least ten hours a week.
  • Require that children save at least 25% of their earnings or the monetary gifts they receive.
  • Teach children the importance of calling family, friends, teachers, coaches, etc, on their birthday
  • Teach children the importance of calling family, friends, teachers, coaches, etc. when anything good or bad happens in their lives. Examples include births, deaths, awards, illnesses, etc.
  • Teach children to send thank you cards to individuals who helped them in any way. child children money learn teach rich poor lesson family budget
  • Reassure children that mistakes are good and not bad. Children need to understand that the very foundation of success is built upon the lessons we learn from our mistakes.
  • Discipline children when they lose their temper so they understand the consequence of not controlling this very costly emotion. Anger is the most costly emotion. It gets people fired, divorced and destroys relationships.
  • Teach children that the pursuit of financial success is a good thing.
  • Children need to learn how to manage money. Open up a checking account or savings account for children and force them to use their savings to buy the things they want. This teaches children that they are not entitled to anything. It teaches them that they have to work for the things they want in life, like cell phones, computers, fashionable clothes, video games, etc. family game parent kid child
  • Require children to participate in at least one non-sports-related extracurricular group at school or outside of school.
  • Parents and children need to set aside at least an hour a day to talk to one another. Not on Facebook, not on the cell phone, but face to face. The only quality time is quantity time.
  • Teach children how to manage their time. Teach them how to create a daily “to do” list. They can put their “to-do” list on their bedroom door so parents can check it each day.

Obviously, it is not possible to follow every Rich Habit recommendation I listed above.

From my research, I learned that all it takes is one or two Rich Habits to completely transform a life.

The reading habit, on its own, can set your children up for career success.

The savings habit, on its own, can set your children up to be financially independent. The exercise habit, on its own, can set your children up for a long, healthy life.

The happy birthday or life event calls, on their own, can set your children up to forge strong relationships. Pick just two habits to teach you kids and stay on top of them for six months. After six months the habits should stick.

Chase the Dream, Not the Money

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

There are many wealthy, successful people who hate getting up in the morning.

They hate their life because they hate their job, despite the fact that they make a lot of money doing what they do.

The reality is that they don’t really hate what they do for a living. Rather, they hate the stress that accompanies their job. They hate the deadlines, the urgency, the relentless pressure to complete projects, the workload and the never ending sixty-hour workweeks, which makes them strangers to their own families.

That’s what happens when you chase the money.

When you chase a dream, it’s very different.

A dream may never pay off financially or it may take many years before you begin to see your labor of love pay off financially.

And chasing a dream comes with its own stress, the worst of which is financial – not making enough money to support your family.

In my Rich Habits study, 82% of the self-made millionaires pursued a dream. For most, it took 32 years to become rich. During those 32 years, while pursuing their dream, they did what they had to do in order to make enough money to provide for their families. It wasn’t easy.

But because they truly loved what they were doing, because doing what they loved made them happy, they were willing to devote many thousands of hours improving their skills and expanding their knowledge. They practiced deliberately every day and, after many years, became leading experts in their industry.

Because they were leading experts, the world was more than happy to pay them a premium for the products or services they provided. And those premiums made them very rich, while maintaining their happiness.

When you chase the dream, the money will eventually follow. Money is attracted to those who add the most value to the world.

Thought Leaders Make The Most Money In Their Industry

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

What is a thought leader?

A thought leader is someone who is considered a leading authority on a topic.

Thought leaders have developed a niche in a particular area. They then trumpet their expertise by sharing content (articles, videos, podcasts, etc.) that is read, viewed or listened to by others in the industry.

This shared content is sometimes proprietary, meaning it was created by the thought leader. This could be a book, blog, a webcast, YouTube videos, podcasts, etc.

When you are a content creator, you stand out; you are unique. But this requires a significant investment of your time. Many hours a day must be devoted to creating your unique content.

Shared content, however, could also be content created by others, that the thought leader is simply consolidating and sharing. This also requires an investment in time, as the thought leader must sift through mountains of content created by others, in order to determine which content is worthy of sharing.

Thought leaders make the most money within their industry. They command more respect and have the greatest credibility within their industry. That gravitas allows them to charge a premium for whatever service or product they sell.

If you want to excel in your career, become a thought leader. Thought leaders are typically the highest paid individuals within their industry.

Inhale Hope, Exhale Doubt

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

One common denominator that kept most of the 177 self-made millionaires in my Rich Habit study pushing their ball up their hill, was hope.

Without hope, all desire and motivation is lost. You cannot move forward in life if you feel hopeless.

Hope is a positive emotion. Positive emotions provide emotional energy, the most powerful type of energy humans possess.

When positive emotions exist, you can overcome all obstacles, recover from failure and keep moving towards the realization of your dreams and goals.

Emotional energy dwarfs willpower, as an energy source. Willpower energy only has a two to three hour reservoir, and then it’s gone.

Conversely, emotional energy has an unlimited reservoir. It enables you to put in long hours of focused effort. This is also known as “flow”.

When you are in a state of “flow”, you are able to focus like a laser on one specific thing for many hours, many days, many months and even, many years.

Flow, gets its power from emotional energy. The primary source of emotional energy for entrepreneurs and dreamers is hope.

When hope is alive, your dream will never die.

Find your hope by pursuing something you are truly passionate about; something that makes your heart sing and stirs your emotions.

Hope wakes you up at 5am. Hope keeps you working until 11pm. Hope enables you to overcome every obstacle placed along your path. Hope transforms failures into learning mistakes. Hope overpowers and weakens all doubt.

“Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.” Martin Luther King

Value Habits

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

Habits always have a beginning. In most cases, that beginning is childhood – mirroring the habits of your parents.

But, as you get older, as you escape the influence of your parents, you forge habits through your associations – friends, co-workers, spouses, mentors, etc.

But the most powerful source of habits are your values – things you care about and which are very important to you:

  • Vanity – If you care about the way you look, you will develop habits that improve your appearance. You might exercise to tone up your muscles, eat less to keep the weight off, take very good care of your teeth by flossing and brushing your teeth often. Those are good habits. But, you might also form bad habits, such as spending too much money on clothes, shoes, makeup.
  • Strong Relationships – If you value relationships, you’ll develop habits that allow you to improve or maintain your relationships. This might include regular phone calls, sending cards, good listening skills, compassion, etc.
  • Money – If you value money, you might develop habits such as a strong work ethic, building relationships with influential individuals, saving, frugality, etc.
  • Happiness – If you value happiness you might develop habits that help keep you happy. This might include doing something for a living you love, such as writing, painting, music, teaching, etc. It might also include developing relationships with other happy, upbeat people and avoiding toxic, negative people.
  • Knowledge – If you value knowledge you might develop habits that help improve your knowledge. This might include furthering your education by getting a college or graduate degree, reading to learn every day, writing, speaking, etc.
  • Good Health – If you value good health you might develop habits that maintain or improve your health. This might include daily exercise, eating healthy, avoiding drugs or alcohol, etc.

As you get older, your values begin to drive your habits. If you have good values, you will develop good habits. If you have bad values, you will develop bad habits.
