High Achievers Are Habit Machines

tip-o-the-morning

Cher, Warren Buffet, Richard Branson, Madonna, Matthew McConaughey, Kelly Ripa, President Obama, Michael Corbat (CEO Citigroup), Condoleeza Rice (former NSA Director) all have one thing in common: they are obsessed with habits.

High achievers are routine-focused.

Each of these individuals begins their day with 30-60 minutes of exercise. And, it turns out, exercise helps you forge other success habits.

Certain habits, such as daily exercise, helps build willpower muscles. The more willpower you have, the better able you are to stick to good habits.

If you want to become a habit machine start your day off with some form of exercise. This one Keystone Habit will carry that discipline over to the office or your place of business and give you the willpower to stick to success habits that will help you become a high achiever.

The Seinfeld Calendar Method

tip-o-the-morning

Forging new habits is hard. Depending on the habit you are trying to create, it can take anywhere from 18 days to 254 days to form the habit, with the average being 66 days.

It simply takes time to create the neural pathway in the brain that each new habit requires.

One strategy to help you along is called The Seinfeld Calendar Strategy. Yes, Seinfeld, as in Jerry Seinfeld.

According to the comedian, here’s how it works:

Seinfeld said that in order to become a better comic he knew he needed to get into the habit of writing new jokes every day. So, he found a wall calendar that had an entire year on one page and hung it on his wall, in a place he would have to see it every day.

Then he got out a big red magic marker and every day he wrote new jokes, he would put a big red X over that day on his calendar.

“After a few days you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain.”

The Seinfeld Calendar Strategy can be applied to any new habit you want to adopt, which requires Awareness, Accountability and Repetition:

  • Awareness – The Seinfeld Calendar Strategy forces awareness of your new habit. Your calendar is looking at you every day.
  • Accountability – The Seinfeld Calendar Strategy holds you accountable. If you fail to engage in the habit, you will see a blank space on your calendar where you know there should be a big red X.
  • Repetition – Your desire to keep the chain going will force repetition, and repetition is the key to forging the new neural pathway required for all new habits. As the number of X’s grows on your calendar, so too does the strength of your new habit.

Overcoming the Seduction of The Walden Effect

tip-o-the-morning

The Walden Effect:

“Your Expenses Will Rise Along With Your Income.”

As your incomes rises, so too do your expenses. You buy a bigger home, nicer cars, better clothes, go on more expensive vacations and frequent restaurants more often.

When your income increases over time, you make adjustments to your life to reflect this higher income. This is The Walden Effect at work.

And The Walden Effect, my friends, is why most of you will never become rich.

The smart ones, the ones who accumulate the most wealth, live below their means. They spend less than they make. They do not alter their lifestyle when their income rises.

No matter what your income level, the main ingredient in accumulating wealth is to keep your expenses below that income and save the rest.

If you are able to overcome the seduction of The Walden Effect and spend far less than you earn, you will be able to send your kids to college, pay off that mortgage, pay cash for your cars, buy that house by the ocean and retire knowing you are financially free.

The Pygmalion Effect

tip-o-the-morning

High expectations influencers place in you can have a dramatic impact on your future success in life.

The University of California, Los Angeles, studied data from a national surrey of 6,600 children born in 2001.

Professor Neal Halfon and his colleagues found that the expectations parents have for their kids pushes their kids to achieve important, life changing goals.

They concluded in their study that kids have a tendency to live up to the expectations of their parents.

In their study, 96% of children who were expected to go to college excelled on standardized tests.

This if known as the Pygmalion Effect, which states:

“What one person expects of another can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

This can be self-imposed. You can create your own expectations for yourself in life. This creates a good type of mild stress which has the effect of agitation you enough to steer you in the direction of your own personal self-imposed expectations.

Are You Good Enough to Succeed?

tip-o-the-morning

Many people pursue success but very few actually realize success. By success, I mean becoming rich by starting a business, either on the side or full-time.

Although the Internet has made starting a business easier, success still is hard. The Internet has not taken the hard out of success. Those who succeed have what it takes to become successful. Those who fail, don’t. So, how do you know if you’re good enough to succeed? Well, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Do I have the skills and knowledge that I need in order to succeed? Every business requires specific knowledge and skills.
  • Am I persistent enough to succeed? Those who succeed simply never quit.
  • Do I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and learning? Successful people are perpetually reading to learn every day. They are voracious readers. They also listen to podcasts and audio books.
  • Am I a Cautious Risk Taker or a Reckless Risk Taker? Cautious risk takers do their homework, only take on risks they have the skills and knowledge for, ask questions, seek feedback from experts and pilot new ideas and initiatives before turning them into a business.
  • Am I single-minded in my focus? Successful people are pursuing something they are fanatically passionate about. As a result, they are think about their business 24/7. It’s on their mind even when they are on a holiday or vacation. They never stop thinking about their business.
  • Do I have success habits? Successful people forge habits that help them succeed. Here’s a list.
  • Do I have an inner circle of trusted individuals who I can lean on for honest feedback? Successful people have advisors, experts, mentors, family, friends and a team they can ask questions and get feedback from.
  • Do I have a positive mental attitude? One of the common traits among all self-made individuals is their unbridled optimism and positive attitude.

Self-Made is a Mindset

tip-o-the-morning

What does self-made mean? Self-made means you are able to rise from poverty or the middle-class to become rich and successful.

But self-made is a mindset. In order to become self-made you must first think like a self-made person.

How do Self-made’s think?

  • Self-Made’s Think Like an Owner – They take ownership of everything they do. Taking ownership means making your job, whatever it is, your personal domain. You become expert in it. You seek to control and oversee the process.
  • Self-Made’s Think Bigger – Thinking bigger means having a vision of the future you. You pursue dreams and stretch goals that will force you out of your comfort zone and enable you to grow as an individual.
  • Self-Made’s Run Towards Responsibility – Self-made’s continuously seek more responsibility. Increased responsibility also force you outside your comfort zone and enables you to grow as an individual.
  • Self-Made’s Embrace Risks – Self-made’s fear risk but do not allow that fear to dictate taking action. Self-made’s have developed the habit of running towards and not away from risk. You can never become truly successful without taking risks.
  • Self-Made’s Take Action – Self-made’s are action oriented. They are impatient with endless planning. They prefer to dive into the waters and learn how to swim. They like to figure things out through trial and error.
  • Self-Made’s Are Not Afraid of Failure – Self-made’s pursue things they know could lead to failure in order to learn what to do and what not to do. This failure learning allows them to grow as an individual.

Success Beliefs

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

In my Rich Habits study I discovered that your beliefs dictate your circumstances in life. Those who are wealthy have different beliefs than those who are poor or middle-class.

Beliefs = the acceptance of something without any proof to back up what we accept as fact.

Beliefs = unconscious programming.

Beliefs are primarily inherited conclusions. We adopt the beliefs of our parents, family, culture and environment.

The wealthy adopt certain beliefs that promote success:

  • I must read to learn.
  • I am responsible for the circumstances of my life.
  • Money and wealth are good.
  • There is an abundance of money and wealth to go around.
  • Everyone has the ability to become wealthy.
  • I can solve any problem.
  • I can overcome any obstacle.
  • I create my own luck.
  • Opportunities are everywhere.
  • Opportunity does not knock. I have to go out and find it and take action.
  • I must earn respect.
  • Failure is good.
  • Failure is a learning experience.
  • Failure is the stepping stone to success.
  • I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.
  • Time is the most valuable resource. I must make efficient use of my time. Wasting it is a crime.
  • Birds of a feather flock together. I can only succeed if I surround myself with other success-minded people.
  • Dreams and goals are the rungs on the ladder of success.
  • If I help others succeed, I will succeed.
  • If I improve the lives of others, I will improve my life.
  • Always exceed the expectations of others.
  • I am in control of my thoughts and emotions.
  • Never quit on a dream.
  • Success takes time.
  • I must save more than I earn and invest my savings in my dreams and goals.
  • I am amazing.

Success Mentors Tee You Up For Success and Happiness

tip-o-the-morning

Tom Corley boats - crop

In a study conducted by Yagi Tadash (Doshisha University) and Nishimura Kazuo (Kobe University), in which 5,000 adult men and women were questioned about their parents, they found that the environment these adults were raised in dictated their future success, wealth and happiness in life.

The study found that supportive parents had the most significant impact on an individual’s future success and happiness in life.

Even individuals raised in a poor household, in which parents were supportive, had better grades, greater happiness and higher income later in life.

If you were not fortunate enough to have been raised in a supportive household, all is not lost. I’ve written often about the importance in finding success mentors in life. Finding a success mentor is the fast track and seamless path to success. Mentors smooth out the path for you in life.

Mentors are everywhere. You just have to seek them out. They are in your neighborhood, volunteering at non-profits, at work, at school, in books and on the Internet.

Don’t be a victim, whose life is dictated by their current circumstances. Finding a success mentor will enable you to alter your circumstances. Don’t let fear hold you back from asking someone to mentor you. Make finding your success mentor your life’s obsession.
